Skype is a voice over Internet protocol application available for Windows and Mac platforms that allows you to place and receive voice and high-definition video calls over the Internet for free. Premium Skype features include the ability to place and receive VoIP calls via phone numbers and the ability to hold video conferences with more than two people. As of 2011, several open-source alternatives offer similar features but not the full functionality of Skype.
Ekiga
Ekiga is an open-source VoIP service that is compatible with Windows and Linux. Ekiga allows you to make voice and video phone calls and to send text messages to cell phones. It also enables standard telephony features like call holding, call forwarding and dial tone. You can buy a premium Ekiga Call Out account to send and receive calls to and from landline and mobile phones. Ekiga supports a common VoIP protocol called session interface protocol and offers you a free SIP address during registration. You can configure multiple SIP addresses through the client and use those addresses simultaneously. Ekiga does not support encryption.
QuteCom
Formerly known as WengoPhone, QuteCom is a VoIP application for Windows, Mac and Linux. QuteCom supports voice calls, video chat via the extensible messaging and presence protocol, and chatting via various instant messaging networks, including MSN Messenger and Yahoo. QuteCom also supports multiple SIP addresses, and you can choose any SIP provider to use with QuteCom. This open-source alternative to Skype can support encryption via the secure real-time transport protocol, but this is not a standard feature.

SIP Communicator is a Java VoIP and instant messaging application compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac platforms. As of 2011, SIP Communicator supports the SIP and XMPP VoIP protocols and instant messaging networks including MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo. SIP Communicator supports video and audio calling, desktop sharing and call encryption (via SRTP and ZRTP). It offers telephony features including call transfer, mute and hold.
Empathy
Empathy is an instant messaging application available for Linux running the GNOME desktop environment. Empathy supports multiple instant messaging services and voice and video chat via SIP and XMPP. You can change the appearance of your Empathy client by using skins. Encryption is not supported by Empathy.
Blink
Blink is an open-source SIP client with two versions: Blink Cocoa for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard and Blink QT for Linux and Windows. Blink supports multiple SIP accounts, offering an SIP account with sign up. You can hold multiple SIP calls simultaneously. Other features include a voice mail indicator, hold tone and answering machine. Blink integrates function with either Mac OS X's address book for Mac or Google Contacts for Windows and Linux. This Skype alternative supports encryption via the transport layer security protocol.

Hardware and software requirements for Skype for Business on Mac
The Skype for Business on Mac client requires Mac OS X El Capitan and higher, and uses at least 100MB of disk space. We support the use of all built-in audio and video devices. External devices must be in the Skype for Business Solutions Catalog.
Note
This list is preliminary and some devices may be qualified for Lync, but not supported on Skype for Business on the Mac.Refer to the System requirements for the minimum hardware required.
Legacy Mac clients
Skype for Business Server 2015 also supports the following legacy clients on computers that are running Mac OS 10.5.8 or latest service pack or release (Intel-based) operating systems (Mac OS 10.9 operating system is not currently supported). Infrastructure requirements for Skype for Business on Mac
The Skype for Business on Mac client leverages both the Unified Communications Management Platform (UCMP) as well as the Unified Communications Web API (UCWA) that our mobility clients use.
The client has the same requirements as our mobility clients in that you must have an Access Edge Server and Reverse Proxy deployed in a supported configuration.
Alternative Mac Client For Skype Business For MacAuthentication
The Skype for Business on Mac client supports Cert-based authentication, Microsoft Modern Authentication, and Multi-Factor Authentication when deployed and enabled.
Note
Due to a current limitation, the user's Exchange credentials must be the same as their Skype for Business credentials.
Certificates
Certificates in use on the Access Edge, Reverse Proxy and Front End servers must not use the SHA-512 hash algorithm.
The HTTP Certificate Revocation List must be defined and accessible by the client. For example, we don't support an LDAP entry in the certificate as your Certificate Revocation List.
DNS
Mobility must be properly deployed for the Skype for Business on the Mac client to function properly. A common failure scenario is to have both of the following DNS entries resolvable on the internal network:
